Educational facilities were in a very parlous state in the early 1800's but were given a considerable boost in 1847 with the opening of the National School.
Expansion took place on a number of occasions to cater for the burgeoning population and when the school finally closed in the 1960's the premises were converted for use as an Arts Centre, which continues to be of much benefit to the local residents today.

The village hospital, opened in 1859, was claimed to be the first of its kind in the country. The building has been extended on at least two occasions and despite various threats from a succession of reorganised health authorities, it continues to provide, together with the Health Centre, a range of services that would otherwise be available only at a distance of several miles.
